They packed the Fire Training Center’s auditorium , congratulating graduates with cheers and applause as each took a certificate of graduation.

With Director Hugh Lennon doing the introductions, the police academy class graduated 16 police officers, including four for the Rockland Sheriff’s Department and, for the first time, graduates for Amtrak police.

Four people graduated as part of the Rockland Community College pre-employment program. If they get hired as officers, they would only be required to take defensive tactics and firearm training.

Sheriff’s Chief Louis Falco gave the graduates and audience an overview of policing, from crime scenes to patrols and terrorism on the 10th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

“With an ever-changing world, we as first responders become the first line of defense in our villages, towns, counties and states and cannot afford to become complacent,” Falco said.

He told the audience that families sometimes take second place as law enforcement “is one of the most demanding and self-sacrificing professions in our society.”

Falco said there are many traits the graduates can’t be taught.

“This police academy and its staff has taught you a lot, but they can’t teach you integrity, good judgment, honor or how to be compassionate,” Falco said.

“Treat everyone the way you or one of your family members would want to be treated if the situation was reversed,” Falco said. “In our profession, you must give respect if you want to get respect.”

Rockland District Attorney Thomas Zugibe also provided some insight into law enforcement from what he’s observed over more than three decades. He said being a police officer is not for the faint of heart and requires courage.

He noted first responders rush into danger to save lives while people are running for safety.

With competing police academies in the region, Friday marked the first graduation in Rockland this year. The academy usually has two graduating classes. It has been accepting students who take the 24-week course through Rockland Community College. The cost is about $3,000.

But not everyone they talk to understands what they need to know, or that they need people to talk to them.

Capt. Troy Schulze recalls once fielding a call about a fight in progress outside a person’s home.

He asked for the caller’s phone number, address and a description of what was happening, but the caller got upset.

“Most fights are over when we get there,” Schulze said. “We need to let the public know that these questions will be asked because we need the information.”

Without the information, officers can’t perform their jobs, Schulze said.

That’s why the Lake Wales Police Department is presenting a “Citizens Police Academy” from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday nights, May 10 through May 24, at the Lake Wales Police Department.

The idea is for citizens to understand what police do on a daily basis, and build a rapport between police and the community, Schulze said.

There is a need for people to approach police when they arrive and let them know what has happened, he said, and not just walk away thinking, “It’s OK now. The police are here.”

Asked if the academy had anything to do with recent gun violence in Lake Wales, Schulze said the police department has been trying to schedule a new session for several months, and has used the program to build cooperation many times in the past.

Participants in the citizens academy will get to see the tools, vehicles, dogs, report forms, policies, hiring procedures and other aspects of the job as defined by city ordinances or Florida statutes.

A lot of questions officers will answer in the academy are the same that elementary school children will ask any time they see an officer, such as what is on their belts; questions adults won’t ask, Schulze said.

Participants will also get to know the officers as people. For example, Schulze said he is a guy named Troy with a wife and two children: A 14-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son.

“It gives them an ‘in’ to the officers,” Schulze said. “It makes us real.”

Realizing that people can talk to officers helps make them willing to help, he said, and will make a difference in how effective police can be.

Some of the citizens academy graduates have become members of VOICE — Volunteer Observation Impacting Community Efforts. The group helps the police department perform daily tasks as workers with the police.

Only two of the current 12 to 15 VOICE members were youth cadets who were not in the citizen’s academy, Schulze said.

The Citizen Police Academy is a 10-week program designed to give participants a working knowledge of the Huntley Police Department. It consists of a series of classes and discussions that provide an overview of the various areas of law enforcement.

The Citizen Police Academy is free and open to individuals who are at least 18 years of age and live or work in the village of Huntley. Applicants will be subject to a background check. Advanced registration is required.

The name of the game in becoming a Police Officer is Preparation

To become a police officer, especially with today’s competition, the name of the game is preparation. If you don’t prepare, you’re in trouble, period. One way you can better prepare yourself is using online practice exams that will better prepare you for police exams. These sell for around $20 to $30 on average, and are loaded with test questions and information on how to answer oral board questions. They make preparing for police tests as easy as possible, and are laid out in a step-by-step method detailing key points that are critical to an applicant’s success. Most will explain “why” you answered a question wrong or right. If the $20 to $30 price is a bit much for now, you could also use some of the training guides on how to become a police officer, which usually sell for around $15 or less. This is personally how I studied prior to getting into law enforcement (because the above courses were not available at the time).

If you’re sure you want to pursue criminal justice, take Amazon for example. They have plenty to choose from, but you can also go to your local book store and find them under the “Reference” section. Just look for Prep practice study exams. These books are pretty bulky, but you should at least invest the $15 before even considering applying for a police department. The information is critical. At absolute minimum (even if you make some type of purchase), you should prepare yourself as much as possible with this minimal investment. Don’t get eliminated because another guy prepared and you didn’t.

Something to understand is that in the past, people wanting to go into the criminal justice field simply applied, and were hired under much less standards.  At one point, simply applying almost guaranteed your hire date.  This is because in the early days there was not a strong interest in this field, thus making it much easier to get into police work.

But with the explosion of shows like Cops, LAPD, Police Videos & Chases, etc. its no wonder a lot of people have become interested in becoming officers.  But with that explosion of interest comes fierce competition. That competition has fueled many companies to start offering books, videos, etc. for people who are interested in how to become a police officer.  That brings us to our next point; On one end of the spectrum, getting into this field has become tougher, but on the other end, its become easier to prepare for. Just take a look around; online, book stores, colleges, etc. The study guides and programs have simply exploded.

Its been our experience that the information seems to be getting cheaper and cheaper, while at the same time the quality continues to rise. The reason? More competitors entering the field wanting your business. We do however recommend that you do at least “some” research when it comes to choosing a exam tutorial. Today I’m going to discuss exactly how to can prepare and pass police academy test. But first and foremost, you must understand that 80% of the academy is focused on academics and not trying to run your brains out like many would lead you to believe. Campus Police Officers can join local, state, or national professional associations to take advantage of networking opportunities, education programs, and other professional resources and services. Many Campus Police Officers are members of a union, which represents them in negotiations and grievance processes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Age: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age prior to entrance into Basic Law Enforcement Training at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

Education: An applicant must be a high school graduate or hold an equivalency certificate (GED) issued by the State Department of Education.

Conduct: Reputation must be above reproach. Applicants must have no serious criminal or extensive motor vehicle records.

Physical: You must be in adequate physical condition to perform the duties of a State Trooper. This includes meeting prescribed vision standards.

The following standards are the basic entrance standards (40th percentile) needed to apply and the Maine State Police Academy standards (50th percentile) needed to graduate from the BLETP, and to enter the Recruit Training Troop. AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS

You should be aware before starting the application process that you will automatically be eliminated for any of the following:

1. Have been found guilty of murder or any crime classified in Maine law as a Class A, Class B, or Class C crime (any felony) or a conviction for any equivalent crime in another jurisdiction outside the State of Maine;
2. Have been found guilty of any crime classified in Maine law as a Class D crime (misdemeanor with a maximum possible term of imprisonment of less than one year) or a conviction for any equivalent crime in another jurisdiction outside the State of Maine;
3. Have been found guilty of any of the following provisions of the Maine Criminal Code or a conviction for any equivalent crime in another jurisdiction outside the State of Maine:
   1. Chapter 15 (Theft);
   2. Chapter 19 (Falsification in Official Matters);
   3. Chapter 25 (Bribery and Corrupt Practices); or
   4. Chapter 45 (Drugs);
4. Have not engaged in any conduct that is penalized in the State of Maine as Murder, Class A, Class B, Class C, or Class D crime, or any provision of the Maine Criminal Code, Chapters 15, 19, 25, or 45; or engaged in such conduct in another jurisdiction outside the State of Maine, unless that conduct is not punishable as a crime under the laws of that jurisdiction;
5. Have been found guilty of any crime that is a violation of the domestic abuse provisions of any state or federal statutes;
6. Have been found guilty of operating-under-the-influence (O.U.I.) of intoxicating liquor and/or drugs within the 6 years prior to application;
7. Have been adjudicated to have committed a 0.02 or zero tolerance violation within the six (6) years prior to application;
8. Illegally sold scheduled drugs or drugs which require a prescription;
9. Engaged in illegal drug use beyond what is considered as experimentation;
10. Is currently abusing drugs or alcohol; or
11. Falsify or misrepresent a material fact when interviewed during the Background Investigation, or the Polygraph Examination, or on the Pre-polygraph questionnaire.

NOTE FOR CERTIFIED OFFICERS :

Candidates selected for initial appointment who are graduates of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy 12-week Municipal/County Basic Police School (or equivalent basic law enforcement training program as determined by the Maine State Police and can receive a waiver from the MCJA Board of Directors), AND are currently certified law enforcement officers (or are able to obtain a Maine law enforcement certification) may be exempted from attending the MCJA’s basic law enforcement officer training course at the discretion of the Chief of the Maine State Police. All other selected applicants will be required to attend and successfully complete this program.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

1. ALERT EXAMINATION: Applicants must have already taken and passed the ALERT test prior to applying for placement on the Employment Register. This may be done by calling 207-877-8000 (there is a $40.00 fee for this test). Testing is normally scheduled for the first and third Wednesday of every month at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro, Maine. This test must meet the Maine Criminal Justice Academy’s minimum passing score for entrance into basic law enforcement training. Test questions are multiple choice and fall within the categories of Writing Skills and Reading Comprehension.

2. PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST (PFT): Applicants must have already taken and passed the Pre-Employment PFT within the past year prior to applying for placement on the Employment Register. This may be done by calling 207-877-8000 (there is a $25.00 fee for this test). Testing is normally scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro, Maine. The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is a Pass/Fail test. It consists of three events: Timed Push-Up Test (one minute), Timed Sit-Up Test (one minute), and 1.5 Mile Run. Standards for successful completion of the PFT are available upon request.

3. APPLICATION EVALUATION: Applications are reviewed to verify that each candidate meets the established Minimum Requirements (above and inside brochure). Candidates who do not meet these requirements are disqualified from further consideration.

4. ORAL BOARD EXAMINATION: All candidates successfully meeting the Minimum Requirements will be scheduled for an Oral Board Examination. Oral Boards are usually scheduled monthly and will be held at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro, Maine. The Oral Board is a structured interview that evaluates applicants’ skills in the areas of Commitment & Independence; Judgment & Logic; Decision Making Decisiveness; Tact & Diplomacy; and Communication Skills. The Oral Board is a pass/fail component of the applicant process.

NOTE: Each component of the State Police Trooper examination process must becompleted successfully. Failure to successfully complete a component after (or portion of a component) will result in disqualification from further consideration. Applicants, after applying, who are eliminated from consideration, must wait six months from date of elimination before reapplying.

The competition is fierce – nearly 1,000 candidates are expected to apply.

“It is not a job you take because you are unemployed. This is a very demanding job. It’s not for everyone,” said Captain Brian Zimmerman.

The hiring process takes six to seven months to complete. It includes extensive background checks and physical and psychological exams.

They’ll be accepting applications until November 21.

The department, which is currently under the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy, is in the final stages of having its own academy approved, which is expected by the beginning of next year.

For the past five years Hampton police have run a satellite police academy with recruits required to attend the regional police academy. Hampton police say by having their own academy, recruits will be taught department-specific procedures and policies during the entire training process.

“There are specific ways we want things done in Hampton,” according to Cpl. Paula Scheck, a spokeswoman for Hampton police. “We were having to re-teach.”

Sgt. John Tyrrell, of the police department’s training unit, says the department has already met its requirement for branching away from the regional one. The academy’s board of directors is scheduled to vote next month. If it approves the decision, the General Assembly will be given the opportunity for final approval in January, Tyrrell said.

Recruit training currently lasts about 20 weeks. Recruits are taught a variety of skills, including firearms training, constitutional law, defensive tactics and driving. The 20 weeks includes four weeks of the recruits being trained exclusively by Hampton officers. Under the full-time academy, recruits will be trained for about 16 weeks.

“We have our own instructors who are able to teach them how we do things from the very beginning,” said Cpl. Allison Quinones, a spokeswoman for Hampton police.

There were also differences in some standards in the regional academy versus the Hampton academy. Officers in Hampton are required to score 80 percent on their firearms training, compared to 70 percent at the regional academy, which is the state standard.

“The main objective of this is to allow us to be able to get officers on the road a lot quicker,” Scheck said.

They received a certificate from Chief of Police Dean Strzelecki. Present were Division Commander Dennis McEnerney and Academy Coordinator Sgt. Tom Davis as well as guests of the graduates and instructors and assistants. The Niles Police Color Guard presented colors prior to the ceremony.

The class met for three hours every Wednesday night for 10 weeks and were instructed by members of the Niles Police Department in the history of policing, Niles Police Department organizational structure, patrol procedures, community programs, vehicle stops, criminal law, evidence, use of force, gang awareness, traffic enforcement and criminal investigations.

They also got to fire a weapon on the police range and go on a ride along with a police officer on their choice of shift.

This was the 14th class of the Niles Citizens Police Academy. Requirements for attending the CPA are: Participants must be at least 21 years of age and must live, work or own a business in the village of Niles and pass a criminal background check.

The goal of the CPA is to develop a relationship between the Police Department and the citizens of Niles so that they can better understand its mission and how local law enforcement functions.

Description

The purpose of this announcement is to establish an ongoing eligible list of candidates to fill vacancies anticipated at various times during the next 12 months. Police Academy classes are tentatively scheduled for August and February. However, applicants will be hired at the time they successfully complete all phase of the selection process, if there are available vacancies, regardless of Academy dates.

Applicants may be processed through the examination phases in groups to increase examination efficiency. Qualified applicants will proceed through the exam process whether or not there is an actual vacancy at the time the application is filed. Candidates who successfully complete all phases of the exam process will be referred periodically for vacancies.

Kind of work:

This is law enforcement work in which the employee is responsible for protection of life and property in Arlington County. Duties include patrolling an assigned area on foot, bicycle, motorcycle or in car to detect or prevent crime; conducting investigations into a variety of criminal offenses such as larceny, auto theft, and robbery; assisting in investigation of major crimes such as rape and homicide; directing vehicular and pedestrian traffic; preparing written reports on offenses committed, arrests, and other activities; testifying in Court proceedings; and other related duties as required. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and involves an element of personal danger. Employee must be able to exercise considerable independent judgment at all times. The employee will attend the regional Police Academy for 20 weeks and, on successful completion, will be assigned to a Field Training Officer for 12 weeks of further training.

Individual situations will be evaluated on a case by case basis, however, a good driving record and a clean criminal history are considered essential. Misdemeanor convictions for crimes relating to theft, domestic violence, or assault are likely to be disqualifying. Police officers are responsible for enforcing laws and maintaining peace. In addition to earning a high school diploma, most police officers complete degree programs in law enforcement or criminal justice and receive training at a police academy.

General Requirements – All standards must be met:

Age Requirement – Applicants must be at least 20 years of age on or before the date the application is completed. Applicants must be 21 years of age and cannot have reached their 40th birthday prior to or on the date of appointment as a State Police Cadet.

Residency Requirement – Applicants must be a resident of Pennsylvania at the time of appointment. Applicants must also possess a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license upon appointment as a State Police Cadet.

Educational Requirement – Applicants must possess a high school diploma or a G.E.D. Certificate plus an Associate’s Degree or 60 semester credit hours in an accredited institution of higher education at the time of application. Only one waiver per candidate, as follows, is allowed:
