Cindy Carroll, assistant director of UTC’s Office of University Relations said the program is not only the first of its kind offered completely online at any of UT’s campuses, but also is one of the few offered nationwide.

“Each cohort of up to 25 students will be offered regularly scheduled courses. Participants are encouraged to take six credit hours or two courses each semester — those who keep this academic schedule can expect to graduate in three years,” she added.

Carroll said students who apply for the new online Criminal Justice program must have completed an Associate of Arts or Science Degree in Criminal Justice. Students with 60 hours of college work who have a degree in another field will be advised at UTC to be sure general education coursework requirements have been met.

Chuck Cantrell, UTC assistant vice chancellor, credits the university’s 10-year relationship with law enforcement with the idea for the program’s inception.

“It was really to meet the professional needs of working law enforcement officials,” he said.

“They have been coming to UT Chattanooga for the summers for several years, basically as a leadership academy experience.

“The folks were saying, ‘We really liked your program so much that we would like to be able to complete a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from UTC.’ So that was the catalyst for the creation of this program … to cater to working professionals in law enforcement,” Cantrell added.

Carroll said UTC’s Law Enforcement Innovation Center’s Southeastern Command and Leadership Academy, held for the last 10 years on the UTC campus, is A seven-week law enforcement leadership and management program designed for progressive and innovative police managers.

“More than 240 law enforcement chiefs, sheriffs and command-level officers have graduated from this university-level educational experience as a direct result of the unique educational partnership between LEIC and The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga,” Carroll added.

Dr. Helen Eigenberg, head of UTC’s Department of Criminal Justice said those students who missed the registration deadlines for the fall 2010 cohort may join in spring 2011.

“Students accepted to the program must apply to UTC and to the UTC Department of Criminal Justice. They need to be computer savvy. And while it is true students in this program can do their online work anywhere, they must be self-motivated and complete work on time. This program is not self-paced or independent study,” she added.

Cantrell said students from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville also may participate in the program as long as the core requirements have been met.

Eigenberg said UTC is committed to meeting the demands of professionals in the field, and police officers, those in probation, parole and corrections and victims’ services would all benefit from this completion degree.

“Increased education for police officers allows them to write better and develop better problem-solving skills. Data shows that a better educated police force means less civilian complaints and less excessive force used,” she said.

“All graduates become more marketable, more prepared to request a promotion or transfer,” Eigenberg added.

The Isle of Palms Police Department says the environment, the heat, the sun and beach patrols are part of the reason why they, like Goose Creek, give officers the option.

“They don’t spend all their time in the car and they have to go out and run to the beach a lot of times. Missing children, water missions, somebody in trouble in the water,” IOP Assistant Chief Lieutenant Ray Wright said.

The Isle of Palms police department said it issues all of its sworn officers with two vests, comprised of an outer carrier worn on the outside of clothes or an inner carrier worn inside of clothes.

“We require that they have them with them easily accessible in the car. Most of them choose to wear the vest,” Wright said.

Wright said about a year ago when the department purchased the outer carrier vests, more people chose to wear them because they were more comfortable to officers out on the streets battling the elements. He said depending on the situation an officer can take them off or put them back on within seconds.

Wright said the panels are made of Kevlar and can withstand a 40-caliber bullet. He said even though the cost of the outer carrier is close to $100 more expensive than the inner carrier, it is worth it.

“They’re just more comfortable and that increases the number of people wearing them,” Wright said.

There are a number of agencies in the area that make it mandatory for officers to wear bulletproof vests and those departments are eligible for grant money to help pay for them.

Most manufacturers say bulletproof vests last for five years and then they need to be replaced. The cost is more than $500 per vest.

That’s not Melissa Burch.

Her name may sound like a tree, but “I never even went hiking,” said Burch, a park ranger intern who clearly wasn’t all that eager to start communing with nature (or bears) on a regular basis.

That makes her perfect for the job.

Burch is one of 13 Temple University students involved in a pilot partnership with the National Park Service to cultivate and train gun-carrying law enforcement rangers who want to work in urban parks such as Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia.

“Most people who want to be park rangers want to be in places like Yellowstone National Park,” said Burch, who interns at Independence Park. “I think they want to get on a horse and ride around. But I love the city. I love that you can leave here and get on a bus.”

If only chief regional ranger Jill A. Hawk (another appropriate park name) could have a forest of Burches.

Hawk, who is stationed in Philadelphia, says she struggles to keep the law enforcement park ranger positions filled in cities like Philadelphia, or downtown Boston, where the national park includes Faneuil Hall.

“That’s why we are going after students who like the urban environment and want to stay here,” said Hawk. Temple was a perfect fit, she said, because its graduates tend to remain in the area. The student body is also diverse, another plus for the primarily Caucasian park service.

“There’s a myth that being a park ranger is all about the big western parks,” said Hawk, who supervises 230 to 250 law enforcement rangers in the region, which includes Acadia National Park in Maine and Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.

Burch said she had heard people say that they did not become park rangers to deal with the homeless. “But that’s an issue you have to deal with because we live in a city.”

At a time when unemployment stands at 9.3 percent in the Philadelphia area, filling these jobs should be easy.

But the requirements are tough. Rangers must pass an annual physical, in addition to background and drug tests.

The job includes search and rescue, police work, forest and building firefighting, and emergency medical response.

Unlike other park service jobs, law enforcement officers must retire by age 57 and can’t be hired after age 37. “We need a young and rigorous workforce,” she said.

Hawk says 55 percent of her crew are eligible to retire in the next five years.

The ranger jobs start at $33,400 with the potential to earn as much as $65,800.

Temple’s ProRanger Philadelphia interns earn $13 an hour in a program that can begin after their freshman year. The first summer, they are exposed to all facets of park management, from interpretation to maintenance. (Yes, they clean toilets.)

The second summer, they focus on law enforcement, followed by firearms training in a law enforcement program similar to a police academy in the third summer. When they graduate, they are guaranteed jobs. All majors can apply.

Burch, 35, a criminal-justice major from Upper Darby, already had experience as an armored-truck guard. A senior this fall, she will barely finish the program in time to be hired before she turns 37.

“I had never thought about the national parks,” she said.

Her park partner is Giancarlo Graziani, 21, an urban-planning major who plans to complete the ranger program, but he is not sure whether law enforcement is for him.

He sees it as a possible doorway to working in planning in the park system.

Hawk said the park service had tried various experiments with internships, but many had not been successful, partly because the park system, a paramilitary organization, failed to understand the sensibilities of college students.

The service would assign them to remote locations where there were no other young people and no Internet. In the Temple program, most students work in pairs, some living in dorms near the eight participating parks, she said.

The Temple student assigned to Gettysburg National Military Park lives with students from other universities involved in other internship projects at the park. “She’s having a great time,” said Anthony J. Luongo, director of Temple’s Criminal Justice training programs and one of the creators of the internship.

The program allows civilians to enter police recruit training on their own without first being employed by a police agency.

The Somerset County Police Academy was the first academy in the state to offer such a program in 1993. The Somerset County Police Academy’s Basic Police Alternate Route Program is certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission.

Candidates who are selected are enrolled directly into the 24-week training cycle at the Police Academy, which is one of the longest and most comprehensive in the State and can be best described as a blend of military and college training. The environment is very challenging and requires a commitment to excellence. During the training process, recruits are taught in over 120 subjects to include: Police Professionalism; Criminal Justice Systems; Criminal Law; Arrest, Search and Seizure; Communications; Emergency Driving; Emergency Medical Training; Firearms; Self-Defense; Patrol Practices; Motor Vehicle Law; Accident Investigation; Criminal Investigation and Physical Fitness.

Since its inception in 1987, the Somerset County Police Academy developed a reputation for providing quality training in all topical areas. Over 1600 police recruits have been trained at the Academy and over 22,000 individuals have been trained in a variety of law enforcement continuing education related topics. The Police Academy is operated by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office in conjunction with Raritan Valley Community College and law enforcement authorities in Hunterdon, Middlesex, Somerset and Warren Counties.

Scholarships are available for those individuals with economic need. Those applying will be presented with the particulars concerning the scholarship opportunity. Do not let finances preclude you from attending if law enforcement is your goal!

The requirements for all candidates include that you must be a Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex or Warren County resident, possess at least 60 college credits from an accredited college or university, as recognized by Raritan Valley Community College, or possess two years of full time active military duty or a combination of college and military that equals two years, no criminal record, be at least 18 years of age and a citizen of the United States, possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s license, have a good driving record and be in good physical condition.

Candidates will have the opportunity to pre-register for the written test from now until August 27, 2010 when registrations will no longer be accepted. Pre-registration is done by completing the registration form on the Somerset County Police Academy website. The Registration forms and a $50.00 money order must be received at the Police Academy by August 27, 2010 by 3:00pm. Money orders are made payable to Somerset County Police Academy. No personal checks or cash will be accepted. Registration and money orders may be either mailed or hand-delivered to the Academy.

Mandatory Orientation will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 6:00 PM at the Somerset County Police Academy located on the campus of Raritan Valley Community College in North Branch, New Jersey at the corner of Lamington Road and Route 28. The program will be held in the Grand Conference Room in the Conference Center (Building # 11). The written test is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 16, 2010 in the same room.

Individuals wishing to go to the Orientation for informational purposes will be allowed to attend but pre-registration is required to sit for the written test. There will be one police class scheduled for 2011.

Directions to the Academy and further information about the Alternate Route Program can be obtained through the Raritan Valley Community College web site, raritanval.edu/police, and clicking on recruit training.

A total of 17 were included in the most recent police academy graduating class recognized at the Law Enforcement Center in downtown Albany. John Proctor, the department’s chief, presented their badges and guided them through the oath of office.

After that, he gave some closing remarks.

“Thank you for taking this step in joining us,” he said to the new graduates. “This is just the beginning. You are joining a family that will support you.

“Tomorrow begins today. This is not a walk you will take alone.”
He also had a message for the families of the new officers.

“They (the new graduates) are a part of us,” Proctor said. “When they are not with you, they will be with someone that cares about them.”

Capt. Russ Barnes graduated from the academy Monday after moving to the area from Tampa, Fla.

“I’m relieved; it’s been a long 10 weeks,” he said. “It was mentally and physically challenging. I’m very honored to have gone through this class.”

Barnes moved to the area late last year and has so far enjoyed his time in Albany.

“It’s been wonderful; I love getting from one side of town to the other in less than an hour,” he said. “The people here are very polite. I love the city and I love the department.”

Proctor himself has been doing the job for 30 years, most recently in Tallahassee, Fla. He took his position in Albany in May 2009.

“I still view this job the same way I did when I first put on my uniform,” he said.

The class that graduated this week brings the department one step closer to near-full capacity, but the police chief said there is still more work to be done.

“This is absolutely good for the city,” Proctor said. “We are trying to get quality people so they will stay. We’re not there yet, but we are still working on it.”

Proctor also stressed that a few bad officers should not necessarily reflect on the whole department.

“There are still a lot of good people here,” he said. “One person does something bad and people think the whole department is like that; that’s not the case. I think we have good people here.

“We are moving forward.”

The department was short 45 officers at the start of this year. Proctor tendered 11 offers earlier this month, and the APD-hopefuls from that group will start academy training in July. They will have to spend 12 weeks in the academy and another 12 weeks in field officer training.

While this group is in the academy, Proctor said he expects to tender 10 offers. Between the group that just graduated and the group expected to start training next month, the department is set be close to capacity by the end of the year.

“We will be as close to full as possible,” Proctor said.

The APD has an authorized strength of 212 officers.

Police Dog Training

Health experts have described the new tests, including 25 push-ups on knees, which come into effect in August, as laughable and “way too easy”.

The benchmarks are claimed to be below standards required by rival police forces, the NSW Fire Brigades and the army.

Police recruits will be required to achieve a “beep” test score of 5.1 – signifying the number of 20m runs achieved while keeping up with an electronic beep – which is considered mediocre.

The Victorian Police Force has a beep-test requirement of 9.4, while the NSW Fire Brigade mandates a minimum beep test of 9.6, and the Army demands a benchmark of 7.5.

The new NSW test also requires recruits to complete a handgrip exam (30kg each hand); 25 push-ups (with a toes or knees option); a prone bridge holding position (90 seconds); a vertical jump of 30cm; and an agility test (20 seconds or less).

Victoria has a handgrip test of 50kg for male recruits under 29.

“If (police) are just scraping through this test, they’d be in pretty poor health from an exercise point of view,” exercise scientist Damien Kelly said.

Mr Kelly said the benchmarks were based on female averages – making the testing “far too easy” for male applicants.

“Males should be doing 25 push-ups on their toes – doing it on the knees is pretty ridiculous, and a beep-test score of 5.1 is extremely slow,” he said.

“You would hope your father could do that.”

The previous testing method was scored using a points system, which has been scrapped. It required rookies to undergo eight separate fitness exams.

The old system meant students at the college needed 44 points to join the academy, then 55 points in a later examination to graduate and become sworn police officers.

The new test has introduced minimum pass/fail standards and eliminated two of the tests – a sit-up and sit-and-reach exam.

Recruitment sources say the new entry-level standards are a “joke”, but senior police, including Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, say the benchmarks have made the entry requirements more competitive.

Lawyers for 39-year-old Bill Furman have asked in the federal discrimination lawsuit filed Wednesday that the rule be changed so he has the chance to become eligible for certification. The state police oversees certification.

Furman is a parking officer and constable. He lives in Boalsburg.

He was set to attend a police training academy last year when he said he was told he couldn’t continue because of his hearing aids.

His lawyer notes the guidelines allow for the use of glasses to meet vision requirements.

Criminal Profiler Job Duties

A Criminal Profiler is someone who looks into the nature of crimes committed and the process or methods that were used to commit such crimes. The profiler constructs a psychological profile that will help identify the criminals involved. “Criminal Personality” and “Offender Profiling” are other terms to describe the job. A typical day for an NCAVC agent will vary.

Work days at the Quantico headquarters include preparing paperwork for presentations to be made for law enforcement agencies both local and abroad, or doing research in cases such as serial crimes. An NCAVC agent will not only construct criminal profiles but will also assist in investigations, conduct interviews, review the crime scene photos, conduct threat evaluations, and coordinate strategies with the prosecutors.

Criminal Profiler Education and Training

If you want to become a Criminal Profiler, the FBI academy at Quantico, Virginia offers the most reputable and competitive training programs in criminal profiling. Their program is highly challenging due to its selective process.

There are no specific requirements in education to become an NCAVC agent. But to work for the agency, you must first become an FBI agent. To be eligible, you must be a US citizen and between the ages of 23-27. Job positions in the NCAVC will prefer those holding degrees in Forensics or Behavioral Science. However, previous experience as an FBI agent will weigh more. So despite the NCAVC not requiring a specific degree, it will be more beneficial for you if you major in Criminal Justice, Forensics, or Psychology. Preferably, obtain a master’s or doctorate degrees as well.

As mentioned, the first step towards becoming an NCAVC agent is landing a job as an FBI agent. Before becoming an NCAVC agent, you must have at least 3 years of work experience as an FBI agent. Those interested in criminal profiling should work on cases that involve kidnappings, homicides, and rapes.

For those of you with an interest in New careers, but wanting to do something different, then perhaps you should look to the police force for some unusual Career ideas. Of course, the main career of choice in the police is to become a police officer. To become a police officer, you have to be made of stern material. You will be there to offer a reassuring presence in the local area, so you should have confidence. You will be assisting victims of crime, and defending people from crime and violence. You will also be investigating crimes, utilising new technology, old fashioned know-how and your own abilities to crack problems and crimes. As a result, this is an incredibly exciting job, which will need a lot of hard work from you. It can be an incredibly satisfying experience however.

If you think perhaps becoming a full-blown police offer looks a bit too dramatic and exciting for you, but you still wish to give something back to society, or you still wish to work for the police, then you might think about becoming a police community support officer. This is typically a full-time salaried role, although pcso’s do not have the same powers as police. They are there to sort out minor offences, and act as a deterrent to stop offences being committed. They can also aid with door to door enquiries, and guarding crime scenes. You will still require a good deal of confidence, but the work may not be quite as dramatic.

If you are not interested at all in patrolling the streets, or perhaps you are of a nervous temperament, or lack the confidence to sort out unruly behaviour, then there are support jobs that still need filling to help the police force run smoothly. For example, you could become an analyst, looking at data and using it to help resolve and cut crime rates in areas. An analyst will help police decide how to target specific problem areas to help cut crime. This is mostly a desk job, but you will still be contributing to the efficient running of the force and the effective execution of strategies to reduce crime. Another career option existing is to become a call handler, to deal with enquiries as they come through. This doesn’t have to be a 999 operator – the police forces have non-emergency numbers too that need manning, so people can report minor crimes such as vandalism.

1. Step 1

   Contact the local agency with which you hope to work to find out their minimum age requirements.

2. Step 2

   Obtain a valid Texas driver’s license through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

3. Step 3

   Meet the educational requirements. At minimum, you will need to have a high school diploma or GED to become a police officer in Texas. Many local police forces also require some college education and/or military experience. The number of required college credit hours varies, and if you have both some college credit hours and military experience, the number of required college credit hours may be less.

4. Step 4

   Pass the local agency’s physical exams. These exams will test both your fitness and your overall health. The local group will advise you of the minimum physical standards that must be met, including height, weight, hearing, vision and physical activity. Your mental health will also be evaluated through psychiatric exams.

5. Step 5

   Pass a background check and drug test. You cannot become a police officer in Texas if you have any felony convictions of Class A misdemeanor convictions. Some local forces will also exclude you if you have excessive traffic violations, as per their standards. A credit check may be included in the background check. You may also be asked to take a lie detector test.

6. Step 6

   Obtain a TCLEOSE police officer license (a “peace officer” license). You must complete 40 hours of TCLEOSE coursework and pass a TCLEOSE exam to receive a basic police officer license. Over the course of your career, you will be required to complete continuing education classes through which you will receive more advanced police officer licenses. Some local departments will hire you and train you before you complete your TCLEOSE work with the provision that you complete your licensing within an agreed amount of time. The specific courses you have to take via TCLEOSE varies. You can find classes and arrange an exam on the TCLEOSE website. There are exam sites throughout the state.

The first requirement listed concerns the age limit. The average legal age to apply for a spot on the police force is 21 years old at the time of filling out the application. This enables the person applying to list their status as a legal adult. Following the age requirement is the education level that is acceptable for all applicants. The average education level required is at least a high school diploma. Some police departments require two years of college as well. Out of all the requirements above the number one thing that you should make a priority is the police oral board interview. The oral interview will determine if you are offered the job or not. You see the hiring panel put more emphasis on how well you answer the scenario base questions than anything else. Of course you’ll still need to meet all of the requirements above before getting to the interview. But once you get there the oral exam is the key to getting hired as well as your performance on the chief face-to-face meeting.

Their goal is toprovides a list of about 20 policemen ‘s in your area. First, click the county where you live will be shown to be a list of the police. Write the name of the individual animal, apparently, nothing more. All I want is the name now. Click on any surrounding counties, and write the name of the individual listed police agency. Keep clicking on all the surrounding counties in your area in writing of any department ‘s name. That should be pretty easy to have 20 of theseexercise. The only exception is if you live in a rural area, in which case you can see a few less.

Now you have your list back to the Internet. I estimate that 99.9% of all police authorities have a website. Drag Google and type in the name of the first section on your list. For example, “Denver Police Department.” Once you look on the website of buttons that say, employment, careers are jobs to be part of our team, etc. Click the button to be takenat the department for employment. Here you can answer your first question: “I hire?” Police ‘s make it very clear when they are hiring. They shall beat their competition dates and deadlines list in a timely manner. A little ‘s Department can say that are not currently hiring at this time. But that’s OK, because you need to know the status of recruitment of the respective department.

Once you know when a police recruitmentHe needs to answer the second question: “What are the minimum qualifications?” It ‘easy to search only for ad position. What are you looking for here is what are their requirements for college, you must already have a police academy, age, visa requirements, from traffic offenses, etc. All in all, would have been excluded from the process right from ‘ start. If you meet the criteria, then you are ready to apply for a job.

• Wyoming residency is not required to apply or to take the examinations.
• Must be 21 years of age on or before the date of entrance examinations.
• Must have successfully completed high school or equivalent (GED),
• Must have 2 years of “work experience” working with the public.
• Must be a citizen of the United States of America. Wyoming Highway Patrol will not sponsor citizenship.
• Must successfully complete all required entry-level examinations.
• Must not have been convicted of nor have a record of:
  • A conviction for any criminal offense, which, in the opinion of the Administrator, would tend to harm the integrity of the Patrol.
  • Any revocation, suspension, denial, or disqualification of their driver’s license or driving privilege within the three year period prior to the date of the qualifying examination.
• A record of several preventable motor vehicle collisions or convictions for moving traffic violations, which would indicate the applicant, may be detrimental to highway safety.
• Vision: Visual acuity must be 20/20 in each eye or correctable to 20/20 or better as indicated below:
  • Uncorrected visual acuity greater than 20/100 must be corrected to 20/20 or better through the use of soft contact lenses. (No glasses or hardcontact lenses).
  • Uncorrected visual acuity between 20/20 and 20/100 may be corrected to20/20 or better through the use of hard or soft contact lenses or glasses.
• A candidate must be a successful contact wearer for at least six months prior to appointment to recruit school.
• Candidates who have undergone surgical procedures to improve visual acuity must do so at least six months prior to appointment to recruit school.

• The applicant shall possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license or such other valid operator’s permit recognized by the Wisconsin department of transportation as authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in Wisconsin; or be eligible for a WI Driver’s license.

• The applicant shall have attained a minimum age of 18 years. A birth or naturalization certificate shall serve as evidence of applicant’s date of birth and a copy will be required during the background investigation.

• The applicant shall not have been convicted of any federal felony or of any offense which if committed in Wisconsin could be punished as a felony unless the applicant has been granted an absolute and unconditional pardon.

• The applicant shall possess a Wisconsin high school diploma or a diploma issued by an out of state high school accredited by an appropriate agency of the state or shall have passed the general education development diploma test or any other test recommended by the Wisconsin department of public instruction as indicating high school diploma level.

• An applicant for employment as a law enforcement or tribal law enforcement officer shall possess either a 2 year associate degree from a Wisconsin technical college system district or its accredited equivalent from another state or a minimum of 60 fully accredited college level credits.

• The applicant shall be of good character as determined from a written report containing the results of the following:

• A background investigation conducted by or on behalf of an employer. The employer shall certify in a document subscribed and sworn to by the affiant that a reasonably appropriate background investigation has been conducted, what persons or agency conducted the investigation and where written results of the investigation are maintained on file.

• Such other investigation as may be deemed necessary to provide a basis of judgment on the applicant’s loyalty to the United States or to detect conditions which adversely affect performance of one’s duty as a law enforcement, tribal law enforcement, jail or secure detention officer.

• The applicant shall be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect performance of duties as a law enforcement, tribal law enforcement, jail or secure detention officer.

• The applicant shall complete a personal medical history, a copy of which is to be submitted to the examining physician.  The examination shall be by a Wisconsin licensed physician who shall provide a written report on the results of the examination.

• Certified as a WI Police Officer or certifiable as a WI Police Officer.

Disqualifiers

• Applicants who have been disqualified during an oral examination may not apply for a position for one (1) year from the time of     disqualification.

• Applicants who have been disqualified during the background investigation may not apply for a position for three (3) years from the time of disqualification.

• Applicants who have been disqualified during the medical, psychological, or drug testing may not apply for a position for four (4) years from the time of disqualification.

• West Virginia State law requires an applicant to be at least 21 years of age

prior to enlistment. Applicants who are 20 years of age at the onset of testing

• are permitted to test provided that he/she will be 21 years of age by the
• target date of enlistment.
• No prior police training will be substituted for Cadet training.
• Applicants must have, at minimum, a high school diploma or G. E. D.
• equivalency.
• Applicants must have possessed a valid driver’s license for a minimum of two
• (2) years prior to the date of application.
• Applicants must not have any domestic violence convictions.
• Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.

Disqualifiers

• the applicant is found to lack any of the preliminary requirements established

for consideration for the position by statute or otherwise,

• the applicant has been convicted of a felony crime,
• the applicant has made a false statement of material fact or has misrepresented

his or her qualifications in the application or subsequent background

investigation,

• the applicant has been previously dismissed from any public service for

delinquency, misconduct, or other similar cause,

• the applicant has used or attempted to use political pressure or bribery to

secure an advantage in the selection process or appointment,

• the applicant has directly or indirectly obtained information regarding the

selection process to which, as an applicant, he/she was not entitled,

• the applicant has failed to submit the application correctly or within the

prescribed time limits,

• the applicant has taken part in the compilation, administration, or correction

of any examination used in the selection process,  at least three (3) former employers state that they would not re-employ the

applicant or otherwise indicate that the applicant’s services as an employee  were unsatisfactory, or that the applicant is lacking in

character

• the applicant fails to meet the basic criteria as listed on page 2,
• the applicant has any convictions for a serious traffi c offense (e.g. DUI, negligent homicide),the West Virginia State Police detects or discerns any condition or circumstance involving the applicant that may grossly impair the applicant’s ability to perform the duties attendant to the position of State Police Trooper at any stage of the process.

• Be citizen of the United States of America at the time of employment.

• Possess a valid, unrestricted Washington Driver’s License at the time of employment.

• Be 19 ½ years old at time of application.

• Possess a certificate of high school completion or the equivalent.
• Vision corrected by contact lenses or surgery to 20/25 in each eye. If vision is not corrected by contact lenses or surgery, then uncorrected vision no worse than 20/100 in each eye, corrected to 20/25.
• Be willing to work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, and be on 24-hour call
• Have no felony convictions. Have no misdemeanor convictions involving theft, crimes of violence (i.e., domestic violence, assault on a family member, etc.), larceny, moral turpitude, controlled substances, or hit and run.\
• No conviction for minor in possession (MIP/MIC) of alcoholic beverage within the last three years.
• No conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs or reckless driving within the last 7 years.
• No conviction of two or more major moving violations (DUI, Reckless Driving), regardless of the time frame.
• Be free from the use of narcotics or controlled substances.
• Body must be well proportioned and in compliance with departmental height and weight or body fat standards.
• Pass a physical fitness/agility test.
• Be approved for employment after a thorough background investigation.
• Successfully pass a pre-employment polygraph examination.
• Successfully pass a departmental medical examination.
• Successfully pass a departmental psychological examination.
• Be willing to accept statewide assignments.
• Knowledge between right and wrong and demonstrate it by example and life style.
• Incur the expense of keeping one’s uniform clean.
• Work in all weather conditions.
• Demonstrate the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide accurately.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

Trooper must live in states east of the Mississippi:

• Age – Minimum 20 years old.
• Vision- Applicants must have satisfactory depth perception, no marked muscle imbalance, and have a satisfactory visual field. The applicant must have uncorrected vision not worse than 20/200 (Snellen) and corrected 20/20 in one eye and not worse than 20/40 in the other eye. Contact lens wearers must have 20/20 corrected vision and have worn contact lenses successfully for a minimum of one year. All candidates must pass a color vision test.
• Drugs - Applicants must be drug free for one year prior to applying. Legally prescribed drugs are excluded from this requirement.
• Hearing – Normal
• Health - Mental and physical condition appropriate to successfully perform with reasonable accommodation, the essential job functions for this position.
• Education – High School diploma or G.E.D.
• Military – Not required. However if military service has been performed, an honorable discharge or separation must have been obtained. Applicants who have an honorable discharge will have five points added to their overall test score.
• Residency – Applicants must bear the expense of travel to Vermont for multiple stages in the hiring process. Vermont residency is required upon graduation from the academy. You must be a United States citizen to apply.
• Driver’s License- Must possess a valid motor vehicle license at the time of application. Your right to operate must not have been suspended or revoked within twelve months of application. You must obtain a Vermont operator’s license upon acceptance.
• Physical Requirements – A mandatory physical assessment program is in place which encompasses the following areas – body fat, sit and reach, bench press, sit ups, push ups, and a 1.5 mile run. The minimum standards for this assessment is based on the 50th percentile for a candidate based on age and sex as developed by the Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research.
