They received a certificate from Chief of Police Dean Strzelecki. Present were Division Commander Dennis McEnerney and Academy Coordinator Sgt. Tom Davis as well as guests of the graduates and instructors and assistants. The Niles Police Color Guard presented colors prior to the ceremony.

The class met for three hours every Wednesday night for 10 weeks and were instructed by members of the Niles Police Department in the history of policing, Niles Police Department organizational structure, patrol procedures, community programs, vehicle stops, criminal law, evidence, use of force, gang awareness, traffic enforcement and criminal investigations.

They also got to fire a weapon on the police range and go on a ride along with a police officer on their choice of shift.

This was the 14th class of the Niles Citizens Police Academy. Requirements for attending the CPA are: Participants must be at least 21 years of age and must live, work or own a business in the village of Niles and pass a criminal background check.

The goal of the CPA is to develop a relationship between the Police Department and the citizens of Niles so that they can better understand its mission and how local law enforcement functions.

Sgt. Chambers added that the courses are based on current topics and trends in schools across the state and country. “Curriculum includes legal updates to investigation, to covering active shooter,” she said.

The seminars added more tools for the SROs to use in his or her role at an individual school. The program addresses issues with students, such as drinking and driving.  It also extends awareness programs for faculty and staff as well as parents.  Sgt. Chambers explained, “We have a program set up through the state called Virginia Rules, which is basically the trends that the officers see as important.”

Another course included the Virginia National Guard Counterdrug Taskforce “Gateway Drug” seminar for the officers. Master Sgt. Dan Dolan, who serves with the Virginia National Guard, explained that the taskforce, which works with law enforcement throughout the state, offers three partnership functions: assisting with drug interdiction; aerial support in ferreting out marijuana plants or a suspect; and demand reduction, which involves working in the community and talking with students. “It’s a great way for two agencies to work together to accomplish one mission,” Master Sgt. Dolan said.

Three instructors provided drug prevention education training for the officers. The seminar’s goal, the master sergeant explained, was to show the various teaching styles. “We try to break through the barrier to work with the kids,” Master Sgt. Dolan said.

For his own style of teaching, Master Sgt. Dolan uses a more personalized approach based on his experience with his own children. He also begins sessions highlighting accountability and the responsibilities of an individual.  “What I tell the police officers, and everyone, is that when I walk into a classroom, the first thing I tell the kids, ‘I’m going to give you more respect than you think you get from other people. I’m not going to tell you, ‘don’t do drugs.’ My telling you that will mean nothing. I’m going to be telling you and showing you what drug use can do to you. I’m going to let you make your decisions and you own them’,” Master Sgt. Dolan said.

The Virginia National Guard program includes a resource kit for the department to use for presentations.  “This is unique for us. I’m glad to do this close to home,” he said. “We’d love to make this a nationwide program.”

AC/DC is coming through the stereo system and an assortment of items — an oversized tractor tire, rocks, even empty beer kegs — line up along the wall as police Sgt. Doug Bagarus pushes Waite and Lt. Scott Hanley through a series of exercises.

In the space that was once a garage at the South Bend Police Department, the officers are now participating in a fitness program called CrossFit, a strength and conditioning system designed for the entire body.

Bagarus, who is the department’s first certified CrossFit instructor, says the program’s blend of bodybuilding, conditioning and constant change make it the perfect fit for police.

“In our job we’re always dealing with the unknown,” Bagarus said, “and this prepares you for the unknown, because you always have to do something different.”

But CrossFit is more than just the latest fitness fad. Chief Darryl Boykins sees it as another step toward his goal of making personal fitness a priority for the department.

“It was one of my goals when I became chief,” said Boykins, a longtime physical fitness advocate who started the department’s youth boxing, tennis and swimming programs. “Whenever I leave, I want people to know that I worked to make this a healthier, more fit department.”

Boykins said he initially asked Bagarus to help identify a physical fitness test that he hoped could eventually become a requirement for the department.

Bagarus then asked Boykins if he would let the department create its own CrossFit-affiliated gym, because the program is designed to work as a competition.

“I’d never heard of CrossFit,” Boykins said. “But I told him to tell me about it and I was really impressed.”

Although the Police Department already has one workout room, Boykins approved expenditures of nearly $6,000 to upgrade a garage area into a CrossFit gym, with free weights, a handful of exercise machines and the odd assortment of heavy items.

Those items — the rocks, kegs, tires — Bagarus said could be used for a variety of exercises and helped to break the monotony of training.

“That’s the old stereotype, the cop eating doughnuts,” Boykins said, as he pointed to the 100-pound plus tractor tire that officers flip over or hit with sledgehammers during workouts. “But now you’ll see cops picking up these giant doughnuts.”

Both Boykins and Bagarus said the Police Department’s fitness level currently matches the general population — with some officers in great shape, while others were inactive or even overweight.

But CrossFit, just like the use of the department’s exercise room, won’t be mandatory for the department, Boykins said.

Officers will be encouraged to use the room on a voluntary basis, Boykins said, and will have the flexibility of using it at any hour of the day.

Because the department’s never had a mandatory fitness level, Boykins said, it would be hard to impose a test on the department given the wide age range of members.

But one of his goals, he said, is to establish a fitness standard for new members, who can only join the department after passing the physical fitness requirements of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

“If we start with new guys, it won’t be that big of a thing,” Boykins said. “They’ll be used to it.”

Ultimately, Boykins said, any fitness program is about making the department stronger both physically and fiscally.

Healthier officers, he said, take fewer sick days and are less prone to long-term health issues. They’re also less likely to be injured on the job and to have less stress.

“It actually saves money in the long run,” Boykins said. “That’s why I didn’t mind spending the $6,000 — it’s not that much compared to how much good it can do.”

Tamara Gallegos was found dead on May 23, two days after getting drunk for a live drinking lab for the Criminal Justice Training Authority.

Police investigated the death as suspicious, but because of her intimate connection with the department, police administration conducted a separate investigation to determine potential liability.

Detectives involved in the case contend in their reports that the internal investigation interfered with the death investigation and called into question the department’s ethical standards.

Lawyers for 39-year-old Bill Furman have asked in the federal discrimination lawsuit filed Wednesday that the rule be changed so he has the chance to become eligible for certification. The state police oversees certification.

Furman is a parking officer and constable. He lives in Boalsburg.

He was set to attend a police training academy last year when he said he was told he couldn’t continue because of his hearing aids.

His lawyer notes the guidelines allow for the use of glasses to meet vision requirements.

For those of you with an interest in New careers, but wanting to do something different, then perhaps you should look to the police force for some unusual Career ideas. There are a wide selection of Careers available in the police force. There are of course the more obvious careers, such as being a police officer! Then there are lesser known Careers. There are also a wide variety of New careers open in the form of support roles. I am going to talk about just a few of the Careers on offer, and perhaps you will get some new Career ideas from this.

Of course, the main career of choice in the police is to become a police officer. To become a police officer, you have to be made of stern material. You will be there to offer a reassuring presence in the local area, so you should have confidence. You will be assisting victims of crime, and defending people from crime and violence. You will also be investigating crimes, utilising new technology, old fashioned know-how and your own abilities to crack problems and crimes. As a result, this is an incredibly exciting job, which will need a lot of hard work from you. It can be an incredibly satisfying experience however.

If you think perhaps becoming a full-blown police offer looks a bit too dramatic and exciting for you, but you still wish to give something back to society, or you still wish to work for the police, then you might think about becoming a police community support officer. This is typically a full-time salaried role, although pcso’s do not have the same powers as police. They are there to sort out minor offences, and act as a deterrent to stop offences being committed. They can also aid with door to door enquiries, and guarding crime scenes. You will still require a good deal of confidence, but the work may not be quite as dramatic.

If you are not interested at all in patrolling the streets, or perhaps you are of a nervous temperament, or lack the confidence to sort out unruly behaviour, then there are support jobs that still need filling to help the police force run smoothly. For example, you could become an analyst, looking at data and using it to help resolve and cut crime rates in areas. An analyst will help police decide how to target specific problem areas to help cut crime. This is mostly a desk job, but you will still be contributing to the efficient running of the force and the effective execution of strategies to reduce crime. Another career option existing is to become a call handler, to deal with enquiries as they come through. This doesn’t have to be a 999 operator – the police forces have non-emergency numbers too that need manning, so people can report minor crimes such as vandalism.

   Contact the local agency with which you hope to work to find out their minimum age requirements.

2. Step 2

   Obtain a valid Texas driver’s license through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

3. Step 3

   Meet the educational requirements. At minimum, you will need to have a high school diploma or GED to become a police officer in Texas. Many local police forces also require some college education and/or military experience. The number of required college credit hours varies, and if you have both some college credit hours and military experience, the number of required college credit hours may be less.

4. Step 4

   Pass the local agency’s physical exams. These exams will test both your fitness and your overall health. The local group will advise you of the minimum physical standards that must be met, including height, weight, hearing, vision and physical activity. Your mental health will also be evaluated through psychiatric exams.

5. Step 5

   Pass a background check and drug test. You cannot become a police officer in Texas if you have any felony convictions of Class A misdemeanor convictions. Some local forces will also exclude you if you have excessive traffic violations, as per their standards. A credit check may be included in the background check. You may also be asked to take a lie detector test.

6. Step 6

   Obtain a TCLEOSE police officer license (a “peace officer” license). You must complete 40 hours of TCLEOSE coursework and pass a TCLEOSE exam to receive a basic police officer license. Over the course of your career, you will be required to complete continuing education classes through which you will receive more advanced police officer licenses. Some local departments will hire you and train you before you complete your TCLEOSE work with the provision that you complete your licensing within an agreed amount of time. The specific courses you have to take via TCLEOSE varies. You can find classes and arrange an exam on the TCLEOSE website. There are exam sites throughout the state.

• Wyoming residency is not required to apply or to take the examinations.
• Must be 21 years of age on or before the date of entrance examinations.

• A record of several preventable motor vehicle collisions or convictions for moving traffic violations, which would indicate the applicant, may be detrimental to highway safety.
• Vision: Visual acuity must be 20/20 in each eye or correctable to 20/20 or better as indicated below:
  • Uncorrected visual acuity greater than 20/100 must be corrected to 20/20 or better through the use of soft contact lenses. (No glasses or hardcontact lenses).

• A candidate must be a successful contact wearer for at least six months prior to appointment to recruit school.
• Candidates who have undergone surgical procedures to improve visual acuity must do so at least six months prior to appointment to recruit school.

• The applicant shall possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license or such other valid operator’s permit recognized by the Wisconsin department of transportation as authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in Wisconsin; or be eligible for a WI Driver’s license.

• The applicant shall have attained a minimum age of 18 years. A birth or naturalization certificate shall serve as evidence of applicant’s date of birth and a copy will be required during the background investigation.

• A background investigation conducted by or on behalf of an employer. The employer shall certify in a document subscribed and sworn to by the affiant that a reasonably appropriate background investigation has been conducted, what persons or agency conducted the investigation and where written results of the investigation are maintained on file.

• Such other investigation as may be deemed necessary to provide a basis of judgment on the applicant’s loyalty to the United States or to detect conditions which adversely affect performance of one’s duty as a law enforcement, tribal law enforcement, jail or secure detention officer.

• The applicant shall be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect performance of duties as a law enforcement, tribal law enforcement, jail or secure detention officer.

• The applicant shall complete a personal medical history, a copy of which is to be submitted to the examining physician.  The examination shall be by a Wisconsin licensed physician who shall provide a written report on the results of the examination.

• Certified as a WI Police Officer or certifiable as a WI Police Officer.

Disqualifiers

• Applicants who have been disqualified during an oral examination may not apply for a position for one (1) year from the time of     disqualification.

• Applicants who have been disqualified during the background investigation may not apply for a position for three (3) years from the time of disqualification.

• Applicants who have been disqualified during the medical, psychological, or drug testing may not apply for a position for four (4) years from the time of disqualification.

• West Virginia State law requires an applicant to be at least 21 years of age

prior to enlistment. Applicants who are 20 years of age at the onset of testing

• are permitted to test provided that he/she will be 21 years of age by the
• target date of enlistment.
• No prior police training will be substituted for Cadet training.

Trooper must live in states east of the Mississippi:

• Age – Minimum 20 years old.
• Vision- Applicants must have satisfactory depth perception, no marked muscle imbalance, and have a satisfactory visual field. The applicant must have uncorrected vision not worse than 20/200 (Snellen) and corrected 20/20 in one eye and not worse than 20/40 in the other eye. Contact lens wearers must have 20/20 corrected vision and have worn contact lenses successfully for a minimum of one year. All candidates must pass a color vision test.
• Drugs - Applicants must be drug free for one year prior to applying. Legally prescribed drugs are excluded from this requirement.
• Hearing – Normal
• Health - Mental and physical condition appropriate to successfully perform with reasonable accommodation, the essential job functions for this position.
• Education – High School diploma or G.E.D.
• Military – Not required. However if military service has been performed, an honorable discharge or separation must have been obtained. Applicants who have an honorable discharge will have five points added to their overall test score.

• Applicants may not have been convicted of, or used other drugs not classified as hard drugs within two (2) years prior to the initial test date. Other drugs include the following listed drugs, their chemical derivatives and synthetic equivalents: marijuana, anabolic steroids, hashish, amy1 nitrates, tolune, cannabis, inhalants.
• Applicants may not have been convicted of, or involved in the sale, manufacturing or cultivation of illegal drugs within five (5) years prior to the initial test date.
• Applicants may not have been convicted of a felony as an adult. Felony convictions as a juvenile will be individually evaluated.

• Applicants substituting law enforcement, correctional officer or jailer experience for the college hours requirements must, at a minimum, have obtained a GED and 12 semester hours of college (maintaining a 2.0 average) or have graduated from high school.

Thirty-six (36) months military experience may be substituted for the entire 90 semester hours.

Disqualifiers

• Having been on or currently on court-ordered supervision or probation for any felony;
• Having been convicted of a felony;
• Having been on or currently on court-ordered supervision or probation for any criminal offense of the grade of Class B misdemeanor or above in the last ten (10) years;
• Having been convicted of any criminal offense of the grade of Class B misdemeanor or above in the last ten (10) years;
• Having been convicted of a family violence offense;
• Currently being under indictment;
• Being prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle;
• Being prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition;
• Having had a drivers license suspension for habitual violator in the last five years;
• Having been convicted of four (4) or more hazardous traffic violations within twelve (12) months preceding date of application;
• Having been convicted of seven (7) or more hazardous traffic violations within twenty-four (24) months preceding date of application;
• Currently being on probation for any traffic offense; or
• Having been convicted of the misdemeanor offense of DWI, indecent exposure or delivery of any amount of marijuana with or without remuneration.

• Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
• Be a citizen of the United States
• Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license
• Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority and agree to release all records involving any criminal history to the appointing authority.
• Complete/Pass a timed challenge/physical agility test that will be conducted at the Tennessee Department of Safety’s Training Center in Donelson, Tennessee.
• Supply a fingerprint sample in a manner prescribed by the TBI for a fingerprint based criminal history records check.
• Pass medical, physical, and psychological examinations, which include a drug-screening, in Nashville, Tennessee.
• Have visual acuity of 20/100 uncorrected in each eye and 20/30 or better corrected in each eye.
• Subjected to an intense background investigation, which includes a check of State and Federal criminal records, driving history, credit check, education, military, previous employment, and reference verification as well as a polygraph examination which will require some travel to the appointment.
  • No felony convictions or a conviction of any misdemeanor considered to be of moral turpitude (i.e., force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor (including DUI) or controlled substances).
  • A High School education is defined by the State of Tennessee as a diploma that is recognized as such by the State Department of Education for the state in which the school is located. If you attended a high school overseas, it is the applicant’s responsibility to have your education converted to U.S. education standards. Any expense to have your education converted to U.S. standards and documentation provided will be your responsibility.
• If selected, you must attend 19 weeks of military style training at the Tennessee Department of Safety’s Training Center in Donelson, Tennessee. Candidates are required to stay on campus and allowed leave on some weekends or as dictated by the training schedule.
• Be willing to and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
• If selected, on the first day of the academy, you will be required to submit a certified copy of your birth certificate and have available for inspection your official social security card for security clearance to the National Criminal Information.
• If selected, on the first day of the academy, you will be required to have available for inspection your Tennessee driver license per T.C.A. 55-50-304. Acceptance of the position constitutes the first day of establishing residency.
• If selected, and you graduate from the 19 week academy, you will be given your duty assignment. If you are required to move you may request to reside in an adjoining or contiguous county to your assigned county but are required to maintain residency within the confines of the State of Tennessee, per General Order 204 – Residency and Duty Assignments. Initial assignments and voluntary transfers are not entitled to reimbursement of moving expenses per T.C.A. 8-26-114.
• If you have served in the United States Armed Forces, you must provide a DD-214 Member 4 copy of your discharge stating no less than an honorable discharge from the military (POST rule 1110-2-.03(1)(e)), or a waiverable general discharge per post rule 1110-9-04(a)2. Discharges of other than honorable, bad conduct or dishonorable are disqualifiers per POST rule 1110-2-03(1)(f).
• A candidate must not have been convicted of, pleaded guilty to, or entered a plea of nolo contendre to any violation of any federal or state law or city ordinance involving force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor (including DUI) or controlled substances per POST rule 1110-2-.03(1)(d). Including a sufficient number of misdemeanors to establish a pattern of disregard for the law as determined by POST (rule 1110-2-.04(2)(a)(2). Expunged misdemeanor convictions may be considered but not if relating to controlled substances or domestic violence POST rule 1110-2-.03(1)(e)(3).
• Possess a valid driver license.  Out of state applicants must obtain a Tennessee driver license prior to attending the academy, if selected (T.C.A. 55-50-304).

• Age: 21 years of age on or before the hiring date

• Driving Record shall be clear of any suspension for the last 5 years as a result of alcoholic beverage or dangerous drug violation, or leaving the scene of an accident. The overall driving record will be evaluated placing emphasis on the severity, date and age, time span, and number of violations accumulated.
• Must be able to perform all of the essential and marginal job functions of a State Trooper.

• An applicant must be a citizen of the United States.
• An applicant must possess a valid operator’s (driver’s) license.
• An applicant must have reached the age of eighteen (18) years in order to be admitted as a candidate to the state police training school. The maximum age of admission to the Training Academy is age thirty-five (35).
• An applicant must be a high school graduate, or have obtained a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) issued by a State Department of Education
• There are no maximum or minimum height requirements.
• An applicant’s weight must be in proportion to his/her height.
• An applicant must possess visual acuity of 20/40 (binocular vision) or better without correction, and visual acuity of 20/20 or better with corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses).
• An applicant must possess normal color and depth perception as determined by a Division physician.
• An applicant must possess normal hearing ability, as determined by a Division physician, without the use of mechanical or electronic aids.

Questions to ask yourself

• Can you undergo an intensive academic and physical training program?
• Are you willing to attend a strict, regimented and disciplined paramilitary style training academy?
• Are you willing to be separated from your family during a twenty-two (22) week recruit training program?
• Can your family adjust to your absence while you are undergoing recruit training?
• Are you willing, when required, to work long irregular hours and endure hardships and danger in the performance of your duty?
• Are you willing to abide by the rules and regulations of the Rhode Island State Police and enforce the law impartially?

Age Requirement – Applicants must be at least 20 years of age on or before the date the application is completed. Applicants must be 21 years of age and cannot have reached their 40th birthday prior to or on the date of appointment as a State Police Cadet.

Residency Requirement – Applicants must be a resident of Pennsylvania at the time of appointment. Applicants must also possess a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license upon appointment as a State Police Cadet.

Educational Requirement – Applicants must possess a high school diploma or a G.E.D. Certificate plus an Associate’s Degree or 60 semester credit hours in an accredited institution of higher education at the time of application. Only one waiver per candidate, as follows, is allowed:

•        60 semester credit hours waived for those applicants with two full years as a full-time police officer as certified by the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission (MPOETC).

•        30 semester credit hours waived for those applicants with two full years of any law enforcement experience that encompasses the powers of arrest under State or Federal law, e.g., Liquor Enforcement Officer, Corrections Officer, Probation and Parole Officers, Fish and Game Commission Officers. Determination of relevant law enforcement experience to be made by the Pennsylvania State Police on a case-by-case basis.

•        30 semester credit hours waived for those applicants with at least two years of full active military duty with an Honorable Discharge or who have completed Officer Candidate School and have no term of obligation.

•        15 semester credit hours waived for those applicants who have successfully completed Act 120 training, as certified by the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission (MPOETC).

• United States Citizen.
• Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Twenty-one years of age or older upon appointment.
• Possess and maintain a valid license to operate a motor vehicle.
• Applicants must be in good health and good moral character.
• Meet all applicable medical and physical requirements.

Disqualifiers

• A felony conviction under state or federal law.
• A misdemeanor conviction relating to sex crimes, crimes against persons, drugs, fraud, or moral turpitude.
• Other misdemeanor conviction within the last five years.
• Conviction for minor in possession of an alcoholic beverage within the last three years.
• Conviction for a major traffic offense or a DUII diversion within the last five years.
• Criminal (Felony/Misdemeanor) operator’s license suspension within the last five years.
• Three or more hazardous traffic violation convictions within the last two years.
• Careless driving conviction within the last three years.
• Conviction for an open container of an alcoholic beverage within the last three years.
• Conviction of a Class A traffic violation within the last three years.
• Five or more traffic violation convictions, including suspensions, within the last three years.
• Operator’s license suspension within the last three years.
• Possession, sale, distribution, manufacture, or use of an illegal drug within the last ten years.
• Personal use of marijuana within the last three years.
• Any discharges less than Honorable from a branch of the Armed Forces.
• An arrest record by a law enforcement agency. (See below paragraph for more information)
• No valid operator’s license.
• Operator’s License Expired.
• Operator’s License Suspended.
• Excessive driving record.
• Convicted Arrest Record in violation of OAR 259-008-0070 Not Eligible to be Certified Police Officer by DPSST.

Age: (by start date of Academy) at least 21 years of age, but not yet 43 years of age

Education: An associate degree, or a minimum of 62 successfully completed semester hours, from an accredited college or university.

Military and/or Law Enforcement experience DOES NOT substitute for the required hours and/or degree.

Residency: Citizen of the United States of America

Disqualifications

- Have been convicted two or more times for DUI, DWI, or DUID.

- Have been convicted of one DUI, DWI, or DUID within the past ten years.

- Have been charged with a DUI, DWI, or DUID within the past five years.

- Have had driving privileges legitimately suspended or revoked within the past thirty-six months.

- Have received convictions for five or more moving traffic violations on more than three separate occasions within the past thirty-six months.

1. Completion of the twelfth school grade. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of the educational requirement.
2. Applicants must be at least 20 years old when applying, and at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.  (There is no upper age limit or maximum age restriction.)
3. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license when applying and a valid Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license at time of appointment.
4. A citizen of the United States.

In addition, they look for police recruits who:

(1) are honest,

(2) are safe drivers,

(3) respect the rights of all individuals,

(4) respect the law,

(5) have a satisfactory employment history and

(6) have demonstrated good judgment.  A background investigation will be conducted of all candidates prior to appointment, including a polygraph examination covering honesty/falsification, family history, employment, military history, traffic, gambling, criminal activity, substance abuse, and credit history.
